Trilliant & OZZ Electric expand EV energy management in B.C

Today

Trilliant has announced a partnership with OZZ Electric to support the rollout of an energy management solution for electric vehicle (EV) charging across British Columbia, Canada.

Under the agreement, OZZ Electric will implement Trilliant's sub-metering technology to manage and monitor energy consumption data from EV chargers. The system is set to provide both accurate measurements and advanced control capabilities, supplying resident EV owners with information to help them make informed decisions regarding their energy use.

Expanding partnership

Trilliant and OZZ Electric have partnered since 2022 in sub-metering and energy management, with this announcement marking an expansion of their joint efforts. OZZ Electric, which has over 1,200 employees and more than 100 projects across British Columbia, Ontario, and Washington, D.C., is active in large-scale, design-build, and clean energy projects serving a range of building types, including multi-residential, industrial, commercial, and institutional sectors.

David Recchia, Executive Vice President for Western Canada and the U.S. at OZZ Electric, commented on the collaboration, stating,

"Our long-standing relationship with Trilliant has always supported best practices in the pursuit of energy management and efficiency—all very important to our customers. The Trilliant solution is utility-grade and accurate, and will provide the much-needed insights to building managers and property owners regarding EV infrastructure."

Brad Sandbrook, Trilliant's Vice President of Business Development, also spoke on the partnership and its objectives. He said,

"We're delighted to expand our partnership with OZZ Electric in B.C. and enable them to help their customers better manage their energy consumption. At Trilliant, our focus is helping our partners and customers achieve their energy transition goals, and we look forward to supporting OZZ Electric in B.C. on this and future projects."

Managing energy precisely

Sub-metering is a method of tracking energy use in individual suites and offices, allowing building owners and residents to monitor electricity consumption and overall energy performance. This approach enables targeted energy conservation and can help property managers identify inefficiencies or problems within a building's systems.

Trilliant's solution replaces traditional wired meters and cabling with a wireless system, designed to track consumption per tenant while analysing building-wide performance. The system uses the SecureReach Low-Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) communications panel, which can connect both new and existing meters within a building or even link to external networks, increasing flexibility.

Supporting EV adoption

With a growing focus on EV adoption in multi-residential environments, Trilliant and OZZ Electric's sub-metering solution enables tenants to track their own EV charging energy use, leading to more transparent and equitable billing. The solution supports advanced monitoring, allowing for the identification of inefficiencies in different building zones or systems, while also helping to benchmark performance across different properties to meet sustainability and compliance requirements.

Other practical benefits outlined include the ability to detect leaks in water or thermal systems before they escalate and to deploy sub-meters in small or retrofit spaces thanks to the compact wireless design.

Enabling choice and flexibility

Trilliant promotes a device-independent platform, giving customers the option to select the solutions most relevant to their individual needs, avoiding the risk of vendor lock-in. This flexibility aims to allow for adaptation over time and scalability across different property types and technologies.

OZZ Electric, now in its 35th year of operation, delivers a broad range of services in the electrical and renewable energy sectors, with locations in Ontario, British Columbia, and Washington, and has recently increased its focus on renewable energy solutions.

The partnership between Trilliant and OZZ Electric is positioned to help enhance the management of EV charging infrastructure in British Columbia, support broader energy efficiency measures for building owners and tenants, and encourage responsible energy use as the adoption of electric vehicles increases in Canada.
